DFS - Fantasy Domination - Week 5

· Yahoo Sports

Week 4 was one of the most painful weeks for me in years. Watching Arizona give their touchdowns to the backup running back, the backup wide receiver and the backup tight end, while all of their starters were dotting my lineup cards. Not to mention, watching D'Andre Swift get hosed out of two touchdowns on a single drive, and then get benched for Kyle Monangai, who went berserk for the rest of the game. It also didn't help that Jacksonville decided to "forget about" Parker Washington while the Jets also forgot about Kenyon Sadiq. Throw in injuries to studs like Lamar Jackson (ankle) and Ja'Marr Chase (concussion), and you have the recipe for disaster.

Every season, we have a Bizarro World week. I'm gonna chalk this one up to that. Fortunately, with DFS, if you have a cockamamie week, you can write it off and move on. So, here we go.

Quarterback

Weekly Strategy -Joe Burrow gets an easy matchup and the top salary; however, he may be without both of his all-star wide receivers. If either (or both) play, Burrow instantly becomes the top option on the board. Jared Goff also has a soft matchup that should turn into a shootout. Even with these two in play, I will probably pivot to a cheaper option like Jacoby Brissett, Kirk Cousins or Jordan Love. I could also punt the position completely with Deshaun Watson or Jameis Winston. Either way, you don't have to spend up here this week unless you want Goff or Burrow.

Fantasy four-pack

Jared Goff ($6,600 DK, $8,100 FD), Lions (@ ARI) The highest line on the slate falls between Arizona and Detroit. Both have shoddy defenses and electric offensive pieces. Goff is the more proven quarterback, but he performs worse on the road than at home. That said, I don't see how either quarterback doesn't account for three total scores here. Stack Goff with Amon-Ra St. Brown and possibly Sam LaPorta, then run it back with one of Trey McBride or Michael Wilson.

Brock Purdy ($6,500 DK, $8,300 FD), 49ers (@ SEA) San Francisco continues to lose receiving options to injury, but Purdy keeps performing like a superstar. This will be his toughest test to date, as Seattle has stymied every quarterback they have faced except Marcus Mariota for some crazy reason. In a week where all the higher-priced options have flaws, I like Purdy's safe floor of 260-2.

Jacoby Brissett ($5,500 DK, $6,800 FD), Cardinals (vs. DET) Brissett will be my favorite play of the week. He is considerably less expensive than Goff, and both should post huge numbers in this shootout. McBride and Wilson are obvious stack pieces with Brissett, but if I stack this game, I want at least five total pieces, so be prepared to roster some Lions as well. I will warn my readers that Brissett will have huge ownership numbers, so if you want variance, consider pivoting to Jordan Love (at minimal ownership) for a similar price.

Joe Burrow ($6,800 DK, $8,200 FD), Bengals (@ MIA) Burrow could rank as the overall QB1 this week or finish outside of the top 15 depending on who is healthy for him at wide receiver. Both Ja'Marr Chase (concussion) and Tee Higgins (neck/groin) are questionable. Should either play, he should finish in the top four. If both play, he will likely finish as the top quarterback. If neither plays, he will need to throw 30 passes to Mike Gesicki and Chase Brown. Fortunately, Miami is awful enough that even if neither plays, Burrow will still finish above the league average for points. Of course, this isn't optimal from a DFS standpoint.

Sleepers

Deshaun Watson ($5,100 DK, $6,900 FD), Browns (@ NYJ) Just two weeks ago, most of the Browns' Twitter was begging the team to cut Watson. Now those same posters are praising his veteran leadership as he guides a roster full of young, talented receiving options. It goes both ways: Watson is making those youngsters better, but those youngsters are providing Watson with the best receiving corps he has had since 2020. The Jets have posted decent pass defense numbers, but only one team has challenged them so far. At this price, you can load up on superstars elsewhere and still stack Watson with two of KC Concepcion, Harold Fannin Jr. and Denzel Boston.

Jameis Winston ($4,800 DK, $6,800 FD), Giants (@ WAS) Against the Cardinals last week, we got the full Winston experience (three touchdowns and two interceptions). The Cards are actually "better" against the pass than Washington (28th vs. 30th), but the truth is they are both miserable in coverage. This year, the Commanders have allowed three different quarterbacks to throw for three or more touchdowns, while intercepting only three passes. I'm never going to trust Winston not to throw an interception, but this may be his best opportunity of the season to finish with three scores without a pick. Malik Nabers is the top stack option, but also consider throwing in the Giants' defensive unit.

Running Back

Weekly Strategy - Wide receiver injuries, paired with a cake matchup, make Chase Brown the top option this week. Jahmyr Gibbs will be involved in a shootout, but that price is getting a little ridiculous. I also like both Jaylen Warren and Jonathan Taylor against each other. Warren gets a huge boost if Rico Dowdle (toe) stays out. D'Andre Swift may have the best matchup of the week, but he fumbled his way into the doghouse and watched his backup explode last week. That backup, Kyle Monangai (toe, thumb), suffered a late injury and is out for this week. So, Swift will need to step back up here. At RB2, I am leaning towards Quinshon Judkins. I'd love to use Omarion Hampton in a massive spot, but his own coach refuses to use him. I may still roll him out in a few lineups because this matchup is just that juicy. The other RB2 options are all backups who have risen into starting roles because of injuries. Alvin Kamara, Emanuel Wilson, Braelon Allen and Ollie Gordon II will all receive starter's touches at backup's prices. Using two of them in your lineup opens up massive savings to stack the deck at wide receiver and tight end.

Fantasy four-pack

Jahmyr Gibbs ($9,800 DK, $10,000 FD), Lions (@ DET) Arizona has been so bad against the pass that opponents haven't had to run the ball a ton against them. Gibbs is active in both the run and pass game, and in a presumed shootout, owning the top overall talent is always an optimal concept. That said, this price is borderline absurd. He is $1.6k higher than the next closest option on DK, and $1.4k higher than the next closest option on FD. Gibbs will top 25 points once again, but that won't be enough to justify the cost.

Chase Brown ($6,900 DK, $8,000 FD), Bengals (@ MIA) Brown saw 11 targets last week with both of the Bengals' top wide receivers suffering injuries. If both remain out, Brown could see a similar workload. Of course, Brown was also held in check for one of his worst rushing performances of his career. That won't be an issue this week; Miami has allowed every RB1 that they have faced to top 16 PPR points, and three of the four have scored multiple touchdowns. Brown's floor this week is 20 PPR points. If the receivers are out, 30 fantasy points is in play.

Jonathan Taylor ($7,800 DK, $8,600 FD), Colts (@ PIT) Interestingly enough, the aforementioned Chase Brown was the only RB1 to not have an above-average day against the Steelers. Taylor, however, shouldn't have much difficulty here, and he also should have fairly low ownership. The Colts' offense is kattywampus right now, but Taylor has still scored multiple touchdowns in three of four games. In fact, Taylor has six of the 10 Indianapolis offensive touchdowns to start the year. Personally, I would love to see Taylor used more in the passing game, but 100-1 as a floor on the ground makes him a safe pivot from Gibbs. If you really want to be unique, consider stacking both running backs in this game. The combined ownership of Taylor and Jaylen Warren should be fairly low.

D'Andre Swift ($6,200 DK, $6,500 FD), Bears (@ GB) Swift got brutally jobbed last week. First, the defense stopped him short of the goal twice on the same drive. He then fumbled a ball and landed in head coach Ben Johnson's doghouse. The added insult was that Kyle Monangai (toe and thumb) got 30 additional carries and posted 146-2. At least half of that should've been Swift's. Monangai is out for this game, leaving the entire backfield to Swift. He will be a beast against a Green Bay defense allowing opposing running backs 29 PPR points per game, and the coach can't bench him now.

Sleepers

Emanuel Wilson ($5,300 DK, $6,000 FD), Seahawks (vs. SF) Rumors of the Seahawks signing Joe Mixon (crippled and old) were quickly shot down after a brief visit to the team's training facility. They should've just cancelled the visit after watching Wilson post 120 total yards and a pair of scores versus the Chargers. Eventually, Zach Charbonnet (knee - ACL) will return and usurp Wilson, but in the short term, Wilson is the Hawks' best option. San Fran has especially struggled with backs that can catch the ball, so George Holani might have some sneaky Showdown value in this contest. That said, Wilson proved last week that he can catch the ball as well.

Quinshon Judkins ($5,700 DK, $6,100 FD), Browns (@ NYJ) Don't look now, but the Cleveland offense is drawing a buzz. Judkins has been inefficient on the ground, but he has made up for it by grinding out production in the passing game. In back-to-back games, the Jets have been blitzed by the Detroit and Chicago backfields to the tune of 42.9 PPR points per game. If Judkins can even pull in half of that, he will approach 4x on DK. At this price, I love using Judkins as my RB2 stacked with the Browns' defense.

Wide Receiver

Weekly Strategy - If either Ja'Marr Chase (concussion) or Tee Higgins (neck/groin) plays, they would be the top option on this slate. Amon-Ra St. Brown is arguably the safest option, and unlike Higgins and Chase, he isn't hurt. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is always an option, but his price is getting too high, and the matchup isn't elite. I feel this might be his second consecutive underwhelming game. Nico Collins, Malik Nabers and Michael Wilson are the three players to whom I will be most exposed. I also love both Packers' wide receivers and may plug one of them in at WR2. My other WR2 favorites are Denzel Boston, Romeo Doubs and Rome Odunze. If I don't use Boston at WR2, I might consider KC Concepcion at WR3. In addition, Malik Washington, Dohnte Meyers and Roman Wilson are cheap WR3 options that should provide considerable upside at a discount. Antonio Williams would also be in play if Terry McLaurin (hamstring) remains out.

Fantasy four-pack.

Amon-Ra St. Brown ($7,900 DK, $9,000 FD), Lions (@ ARI) Discounting Mike Evans, who exited Week 3 with an injury; every other WR1 to face Arizona has gone off for at least 19 PPR points. That threesome posted an average of 28.3 PPR points, albeit boosted by an absurd performance from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. St. Brown is in the same rarefied air as the three other wide receivers to go off in this matchup, and I don't see how he won't approach 25 points here.

Nico Collins ($7,500 DK, $7,800 FD), Texans (@ TEN) Houston's offense looked more natural with Collins back at the WR1 slot. Collins' return lines up perfectly against a Tennessee defense that he has lorded over for the last few years. In his last five games against Tennessee, Collins is averaging 6-76, with three touchdowns. The Titans have already allowed huge games to Zay Flowers and DeVonta Smith. Collins will be the next to run roughshod over this shorthanded secondary, which already has two defensive backs on IR, and that may be down three of its five current starters this week.

Michael Wilson ($6,200 DK, $6,400 FD), Cardinals (vs. DET) Detroit has allowed the second-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers. Six different wide receivers have reached double-digit PPR points against them, and three have topped 26 PPR points against them. After a slow start to the season, Wilson has seen 30 targets over the last two weeks. This is 18 more than the rest of the Cardinals' wide receiver room combined. Yes, Trey McBride will also see a ton of targets this week, making them a perfect pair to stack with Jacoby Brissett.

Malik Nabers ($6,300 DK, $7,300 FD), Giants (@ WAS) Washington has become the definition of a "pass-funnel" defense. They rank sixth-best in rushing yards allowed per game and eighth-worst in passing yards allowed per game. This includes allowing 34+ PPR-point games to both JSN and CeeDee Lamb. Jameis Winston is not afraid to let it rip, and I could see the pair hooking up for at least one score this week.

Sleepers

Matthew Golden ($5,700 DK, $6,300 FD), Packers (vs. CHI) Through four weeks, only nine other players have more targets than Golden. Unfortunately, Golden has caught less than half of those targets. Still, he has turned those 18 catches into 274 yards, which ranks 12th among all wide receivers, and he has scored in back-to-back contests. Chicago has been very solid against opposing wide receivers this season, yet WR2s Jalen Coker and Isaiah Williams both posted big games against them.

Denzel Boston ($5,200 DK, $5,800 FD), Browns (@ NYJ) To begin the season, Boston has only 13 catches on 22 targets. That said, he has turned those 13 catches into 284 yards - the 11th-highest mark in the league through four games. This includes catches of at least 46 yards in three of four games. Meanwhile, the Jets have allowed three passing touchdowns of 20+ yards in the last two weeks. This game should have very low ownership, making the Deshaun Watson and Boston stack sneaky.

Tight End

Weekly strategy –Trey McBride is the top overall play on this slate. His price is high, but not using him here would be psycho. I trust him more than I do any of the WR1 options, and will adjust my salary as such. Brock Bowers' price is higher than McBride's, and the matchup is not as good. Wide receiver injuries will keep George Kittle in consideration as a pivot. If you choose to go cheaper, all four NFC North tight ends are in play. Among them, T.J. Hockenson would be my favorite if Justin Jefferson remains out. I don't particularly like Greg Dulcich, but he is facing Cincy, which puts him in play as a punt.

Fantasy four-pack

Trey McBride ($6,700 DK, $7,200 FD), Cardinals (vs. DET) No team has allowed more points to the tight end position than Detroit. Five different tight ends have topped 13 PPR points against them, and two have topped 20 points. Plus, none of the tight ends that they have faced are on the level of McBride. Anything less than 8-100-1 would be a disappointment and suggest that the Cards got cute with their backup tight ends again. Consider this your open invitation to use Elijah Higgins or Hunter Long in Showdown lineups as a hedge against Arizona screwing up this easy opportunity.

Brock Bowers ($7,000 DK, $7,800 FD), Raiders (@ NE) New England has allowed the fewest points to opposing tight ends. Of course, they have only faced two top-12 tight ends, and as of the first injury report for the week, eight of their top 12 defensive backs are questionable or worse. Meanwhile, Bowers ranks top eight among tight ends in targets, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns despite missing two games. This play isn't the lock that McBride is, but Bowers, stacked with Kirk Cousins, should have less ownership.

George Kittle ($5,200 DK, $6,700 FD), 49ers (@ SEA) The compounding wide receiver injuries for San Francisco have forced the team to lean on Kittle far more than would've been expected early on, considering how shortly removed he is from major surgery. He has topped 17 PPR points in three straight contests. Facing several third- and fourth-tier TE1s. has inflated Seattle's tight end coverage numbers. The only elite tight end that they have faced was McBride, and he posted 8-41-1. That feels like Kittle's floor here.

T.J. Hockenson ($4,800 DK, $5,200 FD), Vikings (@ NO) Justin Jefferson (ankle) and Jordan Addison (hamstring) are both questionable this week. Without Jefferson last week, Hockenson saw a team-high 13 targets. He caught all of them. Clearly, Hockenson and Kyler Murray are on a vibe. Last week was all about the only healthy player left that the team felt could catch a pass. Assuming at least one, if not both, wide receivers are out again, Hockenson may see 15+ targets this week.

Sleepers

Pat Freiermuth ($3,900 DK, $5,000 FD), Steelers (vs. IND) The last time I recommended Freiermuth, Darnell Washington vultured his thunder against the Bengals. This week, I am going back to the well in a game that I feel could be a sneaky shootout. Nobody will be on this game for stacking, so this is a great opportunity to build a roster skeleton that you can fill out with high-priced running backs. Freiermuth has scored in two different games this year, and I feel a stack of Aaron Rodgers, Freiermuth and either DK Metcalf or Roman Wilson will far exceed their projected fantasy value.

Greg Dulcich ($3,100 DK, $4,800 FD), Dolphins (vs. CIN) Speaking of choosing tight ends against the Bengals, may I present to you the gentleman with the second-most receptions on the Dolphins. Dulcich was goose-egged last week in a low-scoring matchup versus Minnesota, and he even played fewer snaps than reserve tight end Will Kacmarek, but this feels like a game where Miami will need to throw the ball a lot to keep up with the Bengals' offense. In a similar "playing-from-behind" game script in Week 3, Dulcich finished with 5-55 on seven targets. Over their last three contests, the Bengals have allowed an average of 22.1 PPR points per game to the position. Dulcich won't come close to that, but another 5-55 puts him in 3x range on DK.
