High school football: Donegal scores LL Section 4 victory over Conrad Weiser

In a meaningful Lancaster-Lebanon Section 4 matchup, the Scouts fell short of riding their early-season momentum.

Conrad Weiser (2-2 Section 4, 5-2) was defeated by Donegal 23-13 Friday night in Robesonia.

After a defensive battle in the first half, the Indians (1-2, 4-3) were determined to end their three-game losing streak, recording their first section win of the season.

“They have some tremendously talented athletes, athletic running back and quarterback. They have some wide receivers that can catch the ball, and defensively they play a sound defense as well,” Scouts coach Alan Moyer said of Donegal.

It wasn’t until fewer than six minutes remained in the first half that either team was able to punch the ball across the goal line.

A slow start was not what Moyer envisioned heading into the section matchup.

“I think we have to come out of the gates early, put four solid quarters together: offense, defense, and special teams,” Moyer said. “When we did that last week, with the exception of one play, the first play of the game, our defense held them, and our offense basically kept the ball, maintained ball control, and limited Northern Lebanon to 21 (points).”

Senior fullback Ethan Reinhard took a handoff out of the shotgun toward the right side, dragging an Indians defender across the goal line for six points on a 10-yard run to get the Scouts on the board.

But when one offense got rolling, so did the other.

The Indians answered on the ensuing possession, driving down the field and finishing with Michael Staub crossing the goal line on a 5-yard touchdown run to tie the game heading into halftime.

The two Section 4 foes continued to trade punches in the second half.

Donegal’s Leelan Baughman, who has rushed for over 400 yards on the season, went untouched up the middle for a 6-yard score to give the Indians a 13-6 lead early in the third quarter.

The Indians’ lead didn’t last long.

With 3:28 left in the third, quarterback Connor Sellars ran in his seventh rushing touchdown of the season on a designed run from the 14-yard line to tie the game at 13.

“He runs hard, always has good command of our offense,” Moyer said of Sellars. “The offensive line is finally back to being healthy. We got a couple kids back on the offensive line last week, so certainly the continuity was off some of those (early) weeks as well.”

In 2025, the Scouts got off to a 5-0 start, extending their regular-season win streak to 14 games. But injuries and leadership issues plagued the second half of the year as they went 1-5 down the final stretch.

Simply not something Moyer and his squad want to replicate in 2026 after falling in Week 7.

“Typically you say, ‘Hey, you go as your seniors go,’ ” Moyer said. “It’s been good leadership. It just got stale (last year)… Hopefully, we can continue this little reset and we’re going to approach the second half of the season one game at a time.”

Before the end of the third quarter, Baughman rushed for his second score of the game on a 30-yard touchdown run to retake the lead with 12 minutes remaining.

The Scouts had no luck in the fourth.

Averaging over 250 yards per game on the ground, the Scouts weren’t as effective against the Indians.

A late field goal from Hannah Mumper added to Donegal’s lead, putting the Indians up 23-13 with over seven minutes to play.

But the Scouts’ offense, averaging 27 points per game, could not move the ball in crunch time, being held up by penalties and turnovers. They ultimately fell in their second section game of the season with a mounting schedule ahead.

“Kind of gives you an idea of where you stand,” Moyer said. “Those are going to be two teams that are going to move on to district and possibly even state play. So certainly get a measure of how good we really are.”

The Scouts will face Wyomissing in Week 8, followed by another tough test against Lampeter-Strasburg. Each contest will have major implications in the Section 4 title race.
