SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football will be without two more of its key defenders when it meets unranked Stanford today.
In addition to junior linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who was ruled out Thursday Sept. 10 with a left thumb injury suffered in the road win over North Carolina, All-America cornerback Leonard Moore will sit out today’s game with a concussion and reserve tight end Ty Washington will be unavailable due to illness.
Moore, a junior who had made 13 consecutive starts, sustained the head injury in the final three minutes of the 37-26 win over the Tar Heels.
Michigan transfer Jayden Sanders, a sophomore, was set to make his third career start and first for the Irish in Moore’s absence. The Kilgore, Texas product made back-to-back starts for the Wolverines against Central Michigan and Nebraska early in the 2025 season before filling a reserve role the rest of the year.
Former Michigan teammate Davis Warren is Stanford’s quarterback this year after transferring in January.
Second-year reserve offensive lineman Matty Augustine, meanwhile, is available for the first time this season. Augustine was bidding for the starting spot at right guard before requiring surgery to repair a broken right foot in mid-August.
“I'm thrilled to have him back on the practice field,” offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said after practice on Tuesday Sept. 10. “Not because I don't think we've done a good job. But he brings an element of toughness and physicality that I think adds to the depth, number one.
“God forbid something else happens to somebody else. And on top of that, I think in his own right, he's good enough to push for being in there on a more permanent basis. I just think it makes everybody around him better.”
Also spotted on the field before Saturday’s game was third-year safety Brauntae Johnson. Out since a first-half injury against Wisconsin in the season opener, Johnson was still wearing a protective brace on his left foot.
Also out since the Wisconsin game is Week 1 starting defensive tackle Jason Onye (ankle).
