Myles Garrett’s Los Angeles Rams return is unlikely to come in Week 6 after Sean McVay provided an update on the star pass rusher’s recovery.

Garrett remains on injured reserve following arthroscopic knee surgery and will become eligible to return after Week 5. However, McVay admitted the Rams are more likely to wait before opening his return window.

The Rams acquired Garrett in a blockbuster move but have managed just one game from the two-time and reigning Defensive Player of the Year so far.

Sean McVay explains why Los Angeles Rams are taking their time with Myles Garrett

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, McVay said Garrett is making good progress but suggested the team will not rush his return.

“He’s making good progress,” McVay said. “What I will say is it’s not ready to say whether we’ll open that window or not. In talking with Neil [ElAtrache], the surgery went really well. He’s making good progress. As far as what that timeline looks like, it’s kind of week-to-week in terms of how he feels. But I would say it’s more likely that we do not start his clock next week.”

McVay also explained the difference between Garrett being medically ready to play and being ready to perform at his usual level.

The Rams want Garrett to reach the required benchmarks before putting him through football-specific work and seeing how his knee responds.

Garrett has a projected six-week recovery timeline, which makes the Rams’ Week 8 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers a more realistic target for his return.

There is some positive news, though. McVay believes Garrett can quickly make up for the practice time he has missed once he is cleared for football-related activities.

“It’s really just how quickly can the alien get up to speed for us,” McVay said. “But no, I think because we got that fixed, and because he’s feeling so good, I think that’ll be an accelerated process.”

The Rams have little reason to take unnecessary risks with their biggest defensive addition. Garrett has yet to record a statistic in his only appearance for the team, but he could still have plenty of time to make his impact felt once he is fully ready.
