The Habs will look to build on the momentum from Saturday night’s hard-fought 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings, a game that featured three disallowed goals and required a perfect performance from goaltender Jacob Fowler to secure the shutout. The victory was especially important given Montreal’s underwhelming 1-2-1 start to the season, which had put the team at risk of falling by the wayside far too early in the campaign.

With Fowler having been immaculate, including stopping all six shootout attempts, he will receive his third consecutive start. He will be eager to improve on his previous outing against Buffalo, in which the Sabres scored four goals on 26 shots.

Head coach Martin St-Louis will make a few lineup adjustments as several players continue to deal with lingering issues. Forward Oliver Kapanen remains listed as day-to-day despite having been injured since the start of the regular season. Florian Xhekaj has not yet recovered from his knock, so prospect Owen Beck will slot onto the fourth line alongside Jake Evans and Kirby Dach.

On the blue line, Mike Matheson, one of the team’s busiest defencemen, will also miss Tuesday’s game. His lower-body injury is not considered overly serious, but it is enough to keep him out, allowing prospect Adam Engstrom to move up from seventh defenceman and take regular minutes on the third pairing.

The Sabres will be without one of their most important defencemen as well, with captain Rasmus Dahlin remaining in Buffalo after what appeared to be a relatively innocent play. His absence will be keenly felt; in 24 career games against the Habs, Dahlin has recorded four goals and 17 assists.
