‘Even he knows she’s not actually a good player’: President Trump’s Sophie Cunningham comments spark reactions
· Yahoo Sports
United States President Donald Trump has publicly weighed in on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has risen to prominence in the political world after she spoke out against trans women in women’s sports. However, given what he implied about her talent, Cunningham might wish that he had simply stayed quiet.

Speaking at a midterm rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday night, Trump called Cunningham “a beautiful young woman.” He then suggested her value to a team would come from her looks, not her basketball skills, sparking a wide range of reactions.
‘Not to help you with points’
Trump brought up Cunningham while attacking Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown over transgender athletes in women’s sports. He then turned to former NFL coach Jon Gruden, who was at the rally.
“Jon, did you ever have a woman that you were desperate to have on one of your championship teams? No? He says no,” Trump said. “Yeah, we like Sophie Cunningham.”
“I like Sophie. Yeah, you’d have a lot of men wanting to go and watch her. She’s beautiful,” Trump continued. “You’re not allowed to say that anymore, however, as a politician.”
“But Sophie is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance,” Trump said in a clip shared by Acyn. “The attendance would be quite good.”
Cunningham has become a favorite of conservatives this year after her comments opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports. But this shoutout didn’t go over well with many people online.
Reactions
Needless to say, these comments sparked a wide range of reactions, with some seeing his comments as inappropriate and others seeing it as a backhanded slap at Cunningham’s talent.
“Ugh, he’s such an old creep,” wrote Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief of Zeteo.
“There is no bottom for this guy,” wrote activist and author Amy Siskind.
“Trump says Sophie Cunningham sucks at basketball but he likes her because she’s hot,” wrote Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch.
“It’s the unintended stray that’s killing me,” wrote Jemele Hill of The Atlantic.
“Oh. My. God. Even he knows she’s not actually a good player,” wrote writer and podcaster Hemant Mehta.
“For the first time ever, I’d like to hear something discussed on Sophie’s podcast,” wrote basketball host Tyler DeLuca.
These comments are particularly interesting coming less than a week after a column called for the Indiana Fever to part ways with Cunningham, claiming that her on-court production did not outweigh the negative attention she brought to the team.
