Erislandy Lara vs Tim Tszyu announced by No Limit Boxing

Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) has been largely inactive in recent years, but has won seven consecutive fights since drawing Brian Castano, which followed a split-decision loss against Jarrett Hurd.

The Cuban fought twice in 2024, stopping Michael Zerafa and Danny Garcia, before dropping Johan Gonzalez twice on his way to a unanimous decision win in 2025.

Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) has won his last three, including a dominant unanimous decision win over Errol Spence Jr. Before these three victories, Tszyu lost three out of four fights, but now under the tutelage of Jeff Fenech, he has returned to winning ways.

Tim Tszyu discusses upcoming showdown with Lara

In the press release announcing Erislandy Lara vs Tim Tszyu, the Aussie fighter said:

“Lara is a great champion. He’s slick, clever and stylistically very hard. He’ll want to turn this into a chess match but I’ve never taken the easy road. I want the man with the belt, and I’ll drag him into a fight he doesn’t want.

“At 160 I feel strong, sharp and dangerous. Middleweight is my division now, Spence was just the appetizer. Having Jeff Fenech in my corner means everything. He knows exactly what it takes to win titles at multiple weights, and he’s in my ear every single day. Liam Paro already did it this year, now it’s my turn.”

No Limit CEO George Rose also expressed his excitement via the press release:

“Lara is a nightmare for anyone. He’s a genius in there and spent a decade making the best in the world look silly. Plenty of big names have found reasons not to fight him. Tim wanted and called for him by name. He wants legacy and the time is now.”

The Big Fight Weekend verdict: Erislandy Lara vs Tim Tszyu

Lara is as awkward as they come. Boxing out of a southpaw stance, the Cuban fights from an unusually wide stance, making him difficult to pin down, helping him to counter effectively. His movement and distance control help him rarely take a flush punch.

Everything he throws is with poise. He never looks rushed, and picks punches impressively. Tszyu is at his best when working off his jab, but against Lara, this won’t be easy to implement. He counters well and carries power, but if Lara is anywhere near his best, this is a big ask for Tszyu. We are backing Lara to win by unanimous decision.
