Michigan benches Bryce Underwood in favor of Tommy Carr against Penn State

The Michigan Wolverines have changed quarterbacks.

After halftime on Saturday against Penn State, Michigan benched Bryce Underwood, and Tommy Carr took over under center. Carr is a true freshman, and his brother C.J. is the quarterback at Notre Dame.

Carr came into the game and immediately completed a pass to JJ Buchanan for 11 yards. The Wolverines’ drive stalled after that, and Michigan couldn't get another first down. The crowd booed when head coach Kyle Whittingham opted to punt on fourth-and-two.

On the freshman’s second series under center, he had an incompletion on a flea flicker on first down, but running back Bryson Kuzdal then took a 43-yard carry to the house for Michigan’s first touchdown and points of the game.

Underwood struggled in the first half. He was 5-of-11 passing for 43 yards and threw two interceptions. In the quarterback’s defense, one interception bounced off a Michigan wide receiver and happened to take the right bounce into a defender’s hands. His other was a highlight-reel catch by a Penn State corner.

Underwood has underperformed all season, calling into question how long he'll hold onto his job. In last week’s loss to Minnesota, the quarterback was 10 of 21 for 101 yards with two interceptions. Overall on the year, entering Saturday’s game against Penn State, he had thrown for 881 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.

With the Wolverines coming off back-to-back losses before Saturday, Whittingham stressed the importance of ball security. He said in his weekly press conference that Carr got plenty of good reps during the Wolverines’ week off last week, but attributed that to it being the off week, and he reconfirmed Underwood as their quarterback moving forward.

At halftime against the Nittany Lions, though, Whittingham tried to spark the offense by inserting Carr.
