Giants face tough QB decision after J.J. McCarthy’s huge 4th quarter

· Yahoo Sports

J.J. McCarthy made his New York Giants debut on Sunday during a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints. McCarthy replaced Jameis Winston as quarterback in the fourth quarter with the Giants trailing by 24. McCarthy led three fourth quarter scoring drives and made it a one-possession game. Now the Giants definitely have a decision to make about their starting quarterback heading into Week 7.

McCarthy completed his first pass as a Giant, but three plays later threw an interception to Martin Emerson Jr., who had also intercepted Winston earlier in the game. (McCarthy had also come in for one play earlier in the game after Jameis Winston took a hit to the head. He kept the ball on an option play and ran for a two-yard loss.)

When the Giants got the ball back two plays later on a fumble, McCarthy made his case to be the starter. He led the Giants on two straight touchdown drives and threw his first touchdown pass as a Giant.

The Giants kicked a field goal to make it a seven-point game and forced a punt, but turned the ball over on downs inside the red zone to end the game.

Winston finished the game completed 14-of-26 passes for 152 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. McCarthy finished 11-of-21 for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Giants will play in Houston next week, but then they have their bye week. It’s not unreasonable to expect McCarthy to get a start sooner rather than later.

The Giants traded a fifth round pick in next year’s draft for McCarthy just three weeks ago. They were 2-1 at the time and are now 3-2-1 after the loss to the Saints. Most importantly, the Giants are still in first place in the division despite losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart in Week 2. The Eagles just put Jalen Hurts on injured reserve ahead of their Week 6 loss to the Panthers.
