Smith isn’t buying Harbaugh’s explanation that the benching of running back Cam Skattebo wasn’t “by design.”

“First of all, that was B.S. by John Harbaugh,” Smith said Monday on First Take following the Giants’ 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. “Stop it, don’t insult us like that.”

After Skattebo’s costly fumble in overtime last week against the Washington Commanders, he played just six snaps against the Saints, all in the first half, with zero rushes or targets as Najee Harris became the primary running back. Skattebo had four fumbles in his first five games of the season.

For his part, Harbaugh told reporters that Skattebo wasn’t benched “by design.”

“That was not by design,” he said, adding that he was balancing carries for four running backs and trying to find one who could stand out. “All those guys were taking equal reps in the first half. We were trying to see who could make something happen, who could get a hot hand and earn it. Nobody’s really taken the bull by the horns.”

Smith isn’t buying it and says the coach should’ve just owned up to what he was doing.

“That’s your RB-1, stop it,” the ESPN personality said.

He added: “What you should have done was said, ‘It was intentional because you’re sick of Cam Skattebo.’”

“Be honest or don’t say anything, but don’t lie to us,” Smith added of Harbaugh. “As the saying goes. don’t spit in our face and tell us it’s raining.”

Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin said Harbaugh did the right thing.

“I thought [Harbaugh] made the right decision,” Irvin said. “Skattebo’s going to get it right, he wants to play. He’s a leader of that football team, so he has to say, ‘I have to do better’ and do better and get back on the football field.”
