The Boston Celtics didn’t have the greatest of starts to a season on Tuesday. It looked as though the Celtics were going to get their first win of the 2026-27 NBA season on Day 1 of the new campaign, but not even a 22-point lead was apparently safe against Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons.

Boston wasted such a big lead and suffered a 121-113 loss at the hands of the home team at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, thus also breaking a particular 38-game streak.
“Celtics blew a 22-point lead today, their largest blown lead since they blew a 22-point lead vs the Cavs on Feb. 28, 2025. Boston was 38-0 when leading by 20+ points last season, incl. playoffs,” statistician
Keerthika Uthayakumar shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

Boston’s loss also wasted a huge night for veteran forward Paul George, who made his debut for the Celtics. The nine-time NBA All-Star went off for 38 points, setting a new record for most points by a player in his first game for Boston, but it all went for naught as the Celtics failed to stop Detroit’s second-half comeback.
Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum had an ugly shooting performance. Tatum made only six of his 23 attempts from the floor for 13 points. He had 11 assists, but he clearly did not have a great performance all things considered.
Detroit was led by the 1-2 combo of Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, who each had 19 points, while Javonte Green came off the bench and fired 19 points — all in the second half.
The 0-1 Celtics will next face the New York Knicks at TD Garden in Boston on Friday.
