The wait is finally over for basketball fans because the new NBA season tips off today. After a very active summer, the Eastern Conference is set up to be highly entertaining because it has the defending champions, the New York Knicks, and as many as 13 teams with the talent and potential to be playoff contenders. But there will only be eight spots available for the 2026-27 playoffs, meaning some worthy clubs will miss the postseason because the conference is as good as it has been in a very long time.

Before the new NBA campaign begins today, we look into our crystal (basket)ball and offer up predictions for the eight teams that will survive the regular season and reach the playoffs in the spring.

8. Indiana Pacers

After suffering through a rough season, the Indiana Pacers are expected to be far better in 2026-27. The main reason why is that top star Tyrese Haliburton will be back on the court after missing a year to rehab a ruptured Achilles. Plus, they addressed their hole at center when they traded for Ivica Zubac before last season’s trade deadline.

There is no reason to believe the Pacers won’t get back to being an elite offensive team again, like they were when they reached the Finals two seasons ago. However, because defense has always been their weakness, with the East far better this time around, Indiana will just barely sneak into the playoffs in the spring.

7. Miami Heat

The Miami Heat missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019, and that was what motivated them to make a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Bucks icon Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer. When you add one of the best players on Earth, better days are surely ahead in South Beach.

However, if Antetokounmpo again gets banged up and misses time as he has consistently in recent seasons, the Heat don’t have a lot after him and Bam Adebayo. Miami will make the playoffs, but it won’t be easy as their depth gets tested during the campaign.

6. Philadelphia 76ers

On paper, the Philadelphia 76ers are a matchup nightmare after they traded for Jaylen Brown and signed LeBron James in free agency. However, while their potential is massive, there are also big questions surrounding this star-studded roster ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.

Which star or stars will sacrifice their stats for the betterment of the team? Can they get defensive stops when it matters most? Who will be the No. 1 scoring option? Will James and Joel Embiid suit up in over 60 games? How long will it take the starting five to mesh? Come playoff time, the 76ers may be scary, but they will hit many bumps in the road to get to that point.

5. Boston Celtics

The assumption will be that the Boston Celtics take a step back after trading Jaylen Brown this summer. However, this is the same team that won 56 games without Jayson Tatum last season. They are too well coached, and play too high a level of defense not to have another very good campaign in 2026-27.

If Paul George can stay healthy and actually contribute meaningful minutes, it would not be a surprise if the Celtics are competing for a top four spot in the East this season.

4. Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors took another nice development step forward last season in year three for head coach Darko Rajakovic. Their offense was rock solid, but their improvements on defense are why they finished with the fifth-best record in the conference.

This entire season hinges on the health of Kawhi Leonard. If he can be on the court often and play like he did this past season, the Raptors will be a tough team to beat each night. We predict he plays in over 60 games and is a big contributor for Toronto this year.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers

While the Cleveland Cavaliers regressed during the first half of last season, compared to the year before, once they made the trade for James Harden, they played like one of the best teams in the East. Now, with a full training camp together, the Cavaliers expect to get off to a much faster start, and there is no reason not to believe them.

Cleveland has one of the deeper rosters in the NBA and talented players all over the court. Who knows if they will get to the Conference Finals, but during the regular season the Cavaliers should be pretty good.

2. New York Knicks

The Knicks were a formidable team in 2025-26, but they weren’t without weaknesses. It is why they weren’t a favorite going into the playoffs. However, after making a major adjustment on offense and finding a groove defensively, they were a dominant force in the spring en route to the franchise’s first title since 1973.

Much of their championship team is back this year. So barring a major injury to a key player (which is possible), the Knicks are built to compete for the best record in the East in the new season.

1. Detroit Pistons

Since they didn’t make a major move in the offseason and were in a contract dispute with All-Star Jalen Duren for months, the Detroit Pistons have seemed like an afterthought. However, this team finished first in the East last season with a 60-22 record, and their young core is still getting better.

Furthermore, they made some nice smaller moves in the offseason that should shore up some of their biggest problems last season. Don’t be surprised if the Pistons again have the best record in the conference once the playoffs start.
