Damian Lillard, even at age 36 and coming off a ruptured Achilles, still got it. On Tuesday night, it was Lillard who drove the dagger into the Los Angeles Lakers’ heart, powering the Portland Trail Blazers to a 136-129 victory to stay unbeaten through three contests.
The fourth quarter saw the Blazers and Lakers trade blows to the point where the game was still hanging in the balance with less than a minute remaining in the contest. With around 45 seconds remaining in the game and Portland up by just three, 132-129, the Blazers gave Lillard the ball on a kickout from Deni Avdija and let him go to work.
Lillard then faked former teammate Matisse Thybulle out of his shoes, and with Ziaire Williams having to scramble from out far, there was no way the Lakers were going to close out on the Blazers star’s triple. The veteran floor general would then make the Purple and Gold pay, nailing his fourth triple of the night to extend their lead to six and drilling the dagger that put the game out of reach.

This sparked some major celebrations from the Blazers, with Lillard first adopting Avdija’s signature three-point celly. But of course, it’s not a clutch shot from Lillard without someone making the Dame Time celebration — with Ja Morant being the one to get the ball rolling after the Lakers had called a timeout.

The Blazers are looking very scary to begin the new campaign. They showed that they have so much firepower on offense, as they had four 20-point scorers on the night in Avdija (23), Morant (23), Jrue Holiday (22), and Lillard (21). Moreover, they have the personnel on defense to help cover for their backcourt’s lack of size.
Lillard is now averaging 21.7 points through his first three games back from injury, doing so on 45.2% shooting from the field and 42.3% from beyond the arc.
