Maryland started 2-0, and then it all fell apart, especially defensively, with an ugly five-game losing streak. Losing 37-30 to a miserable Rutgers team was the last straw for the Mike Locksley era, and now it’s up to defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim to get the team through the rest of the season.
As bad as things have been for the Terps, if they can pull this off and get to 3-5, all of a sudden there’s an outside shot to win three of the last four games and get bowl eligible.
Illinois collapsed against Duke, got rolled by Ohio State, and lost at home to Purdue. At 2-3 and with the season slipping away, the Illini survived in overtime against Michigan State, and then came the potential turning point with a 21-10 win over Oregon.

Why Illinois Will Win
Maryland needs all the help it can get, and that includes getting a slew of Illinois mistakes. The Illini have only been hit for 30 penalties and have turned it over just five times in the first seven games.
How did Illinois beat Oregon? Enough was apparently enough for an inconsistent running game that underwhelmed a bit too often.
The Illini pounded away for a season-high 225 yards, and the offensive line should have similar success against a Terp front that got hammered for over 200 yards in three of the last four games.
Why Maryland Will Win
Let it rip.
The Maryland offense isn’t turning it over lately, but against the Illini, the Terp offense has to start hitting more big plays, and at the same time, quarterback Malik Washington needs to be far more accurate.
He’s struggling to hit half of his passes in Big Ten play, but after the coaching change, he and the offense have to figure out which way to go. Take more deep shots and open it up, or start hitting the midrange throws.
Illinois has allowed over 200 passing yards in every game and is getting feasted on by Big Ten quarterbacks.
