OKC Thunder signing Ochai Agbaji to final roster spot after injuries to key players

The OKC Thunder intends to sign Ochai Agbaji to a standard contract, according to multiple reports Friday.

Agbaji is a 26-year-old guard who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the No. 14 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft after winning the NCAA title with Kansas. He spent last season with the Toronto Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 5.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 15.7 minutes on 43.6% shooting from the field (26.6% from deep).

Agbaji will fill OKC's 15th and final standard roster spot. Details on the deal have not yet been announced. But the Thunder was $6.9 million underneath the second apron prior to making this move, and the expectation is that it'll remain below that threshold.

HoopsHype's Michael Scotto first reported the news.

Agbaji is a 6-foot-5 wing who can provide 3-and-D production. He's a good athlete with a high motor and an ability to space the floor in catch-and-shoot situations. His best shooting season came in 2024-25, when he went 39.9% from deep on four attempts per game with Toronto.

Agbaji will get an opportunity to contribute right away to an OKC team that has been hit hard with injuries this season.

Jalen Williams underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to address a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle on the left side. He'll be re-evaluated at the end of this regular season. Cason Wallace, another elite point-of-attack defender, is awaiting surgery to address a torn labrum in his left shoulder. A timeline for his return will be provided after that procedure is completed.

OKC also took a flyer on another wing defender in Micah Peavy, who signed a two-way deal with the team on Oct. 23.
