Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), inaugurated upgraded facilities at Kamakhya Railway Station, marking a significant step towards improving passenger amenities and strengthening station infrastructure. The upgradation works cover the station building, platforms, reserve lounge, concourse, circulating area, roads and other ancillary facilities, with a focus on enhancing passenger comfort, accessibility and operational efficiency.
As part of the improvements, dedicated traffic lanes, a covered pick-up and drop-off portico and a double-lane exit road have been developed to facilitate smoother vehicular movement and reduce congestion during peak hours. The reserve lounge has been upgraded with improved interiors, lighting, ventilation, air-conditioning, furniture, toilets and pantry facilities, while its seating capacity has been doubled. An integrated passenger information system, improved announcement facilities and Wi-Fi connectivity have also been provided for greater convenience and better access to travel-related information.

Platform No. 4 has been upgraded with improved flooring and coping, new colour-coated roofing sheets and wider gutters for efficient rainwater drainage. Previously uncovered areas between the foot overbridge and platform shelters have been covered to provide better protection from adverse weather conditions. Passenger seating capacity has been enhanced from 150 to 360, while two dedicated drinking-water booths for Divyangjan passengers and five additional booths for other passengers have been provided. Dedicated cable ducts and replacement of the old, damaged water-supply pipeline with concealed piping further improve infrastructure management and the reliability of essential services.
In addition, the road connecting Kamakhya Railway Station with the Coaching Depot has been widened into a two-lane facility following the construction of a retaining wall. This has improved access for heavy vehicles carrying materials, machinery and spare parts, while facilitating smoother and safer movement, reducing congestion and supporting more efficient depot operations.
These improvements reflect Northeast Frontier Railway’s continued commitment to providing better passenger amenities, improving accessibility and strengthening railway infrastructure. The upgraded facilities are expected to contribute to a more comfortable, convenient and passenger-friendly experience at Kamakhya Railway Station.
