There was a potentially encouraging sight for Bayern Munich supporters following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund, as Manuel Neuer was present with the team in the dressing room after Der Klassiker.

The Bayern Munich captain has been dealing with persistent foot tendonitis, which kept him out of the match against Dortmund, leaving Jonas Urbig to take his place between the posts. With Bayern facing another massive challenge against Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, Neuer’s availability remains an important question for Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff.

As Neuer left the Allianz Arena, Sky Sport Germany asked whether his recovery would progress sufficiently for him to feature against Atlético. The veteran goalkeeper offered a brief but hopeful response.

“I hope so,” Neuer said (as captured by Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau).

Naturally, that is not confirmation that Neuer will be available for the trip to Madrid, but it does suggest that the 39-year-old has not ruled out the possibility of returning. Bayern Munich will need to assess his condition over the coming days before making a decision. Given the importance of the Champions League fixture, the club will certainly want its captain back if he is physically ready.

For now, Neuer‘s participation remains uncertain, but his presence with the squad after Der Klassiker is at least an encouraging development. Bayern supporters will be hoping his wish becomes reality on Tuesday.
