Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule spoke about potentially retiring after his daughter had to face an unpleasant experience with a fan.
Matt Rhule got Nebraska off to a 5-0 start in 2026, raising hopes that the Cornhuskers could finally take a significant step forward in his fourth season. However, Nebraska has since lost three straight games to Indiana, Oregon and Washington, leaving Rhule under pressure to turn the season around.

The Huskers’ defence has kept them in games but there have been notable issues on offence lately. The last three losses they have suffered have seen them lose by a combined 13 points. And following the Washington disappointment, there was one unfortunate incident which had Rhule questioning his career.
Matt Rhule says his 13-year-old daughter having to face a profane fan almost led to him not wanting to coach anymore
Sports can be quite a cruel business, and a lot of this is due to how fans can end up behaving. The Huskers were flying high early in the season, but their recent skid has seen the head coach’s children being subjected to some nasty rhetoric.
Rhule shared the story of what his 13-year-old daughter dealt with, making it clear just how much the situation ended up impacting him.
“A guy walked up to my 13-year-old daughter and was like, ‘F*** you and f*** your dad.’ I’m not going to keep coaching if it means my kids grow up s****** up,” Rhule said. “I’m not coaching for the guy that attacked my daughter, I’m coaching for the people in the boat. I said to my daughter, ‘If daddy’s gotta retire, if I have to retire because I don’t want you guys growing up in that environment…
“I’m not leaving. I’m not quitting. I’m fighting for those people. For the people who are listening to the game while they’re on a combine. We are going to fight for those people. But please don’t ever question how hard these kids are working or how hard these coaches are working or how hard I’m working.”
It’s not surprising that fans can get emotional at times, but saying something like that to a child is well beyond the pale. Nebraska is lucky that Rhule seems committed to staying. This type of incident genuinely could have been enough to get a coach to move on from the team.
