Oklahoma Sooners suffer upset loss to East Texas A&M on opening night

The Oklahoma Sooners opened the 2026-2027 season in historic fashion at the Lloyd Noble Center in their 68-64 loss to East Texas A&M. Last year, East Texas A&M went 11-21. According to ESPN, it was the second-largest upset in Division 1 basketball in the last 30 years. Missed free throws and a subpar shooting night from three-point range sunk the Sooners.
Oklahoma missed 15 free throws and 15 three-pointers in a four-point loss. Although Oklahoma shot 40.4% from the field, the Sooners hit only 25% of their three-point attempts. Meanwhile, East Texas A&M shot 43.9% from the field and 40.7 from three.

And that was the story of the game.
"The only thing I know to do is apologize to the fan base and get better," OU coach Porter Moser said after the loss. "The things you do in a game like this in basketball that get you beat, we did."
The Sooners were without star guard Xzayvier Brown, but that doesn't account for the poor shooting night from the rest of the squad. The Sooners had just two players in double figures. Transfer guard Pop Isaacs led the way with 15 points, and forward Derion Reid had 14.
Heading into the season, it was believed the Oklahoma Sooners had significantly improved. However, in Porter Moser's fifth season at the helm, the Sooners suffered arguably their biggest opening-day upset. Now the Sooners have put themselves in a rough spot. Any hopes of making the NCAA Tournament this season rest on the Sooners mounting a significant bounceback the rest of the season.
