Since its inception, more than 29,000 students have participated in the program, which operates in partnership with FedEx, Shell Polymers, Wabtec and U.S. Steel.

During the event, former Steeler Charlie Batch used football scenarios to teach math concepts to the middle school students.

“Jaylen Warren rushes for 112 yards. If 35 of those came on one run, how many yards did he gain on the other runs?” Batch asked.

He also highlighted the financial practicalities of learning math skills early.

“Gotta be able to count the money when ya make it right?!” Batch said.“

Heidi Chappell, director of community engagement at U.S. Steel, highlighted how early STEM education connects directly to career opportunities in the region.

“We have a lot of jobs at our facility and every one of our jobs involves STEM, with science, technology, engineering and math skills,” Chappell said.

Chappell noted that students can work for U.S. Steel directly after graduating high school. “There could be jobs down the street for them, that they can stay in their same communities just by learning the skills that they’re learning at middle school,” Chappell said.
