Getty ImagesThe fourth episode of the Internet Invitational will send 16 golfers home as Team White leads Team Green 6-2 headed into singles match play on the back nine of Buffalo Ridge at Big Cedar Lodge.
The front nine paired Barstool-selected players against the opposing team in a two-man scramble format. The morning’s competition was devastating to Team Green, which won only one match: Wesley Bryan and Bobby Burger beat Ryan Ruffels and Riggs on the final hole.
Two other matches halved. Talk among the Barstool staff was that Team White had the strongest draft class and would be difficult to beat.
Notably, Bobby Ray showed a turnaround in his game and demeanor. He drove or nearly drove multiple greens and was the deciding factor in the first match win of the day, with Team White winning 3&2. In addition to the win, Bobby Ray and The Duke made a birdie on the par-three 9th hole for $25,000 each. The Duke was happy to show off his dance moves on the green after making the putt.
The afternoon had 16 points up for grabs in 1v1 match play. Barstool’s Big Cat and Dave Portnoy selected pairings, with only one change voiced by the two teams. With 14 matches on the course, Team White led in seven.
When playing for $4 million, things get heated fast, and they hit a boiling point on the 13th hole. With the cameras rolling, Sam Heung Min thought he saw the ball of Big John move during his setup, which would enforce a stroke penalty.
“Did your ball roll just a little bit while addressing it?” Bryan said to Big John on YouTube regarding his shot on hole 13. “You could have very well not even seen it. Whether it positively or negatively affects it, it does not matter.”
“I’ve been drinking all day and I might have touched it,” Big John said.
The mental anguish was short-lived. After a pep talk, Big John put away Sam 3&2 and watched the two captains play head to head.
Cheddy hit a wayward drive on the final hole, it was a lost ball, and another rules controversy erupted. Cheddy could not remember the brand or number on his ball and was forced to take a penalty. Portnoy was easily overheard by Riggs cheering for Cheddy. Riggs would win the hole and square the match.
Down the board, it was a white flood. With every group through at least four holes and six groups finished, Team White was up 10-4.
“The Whoop is exploding, it doesn’t know how to react to my heartbeat,” Evan Thompson of Team Green said after his tee shot on 18 on YouTube.
Thompson would hit the longest drive on the hole and stick his approach to five feet on the par-five finishing hole. He would win the hole and win his match.
The victory would be short-lived. The day was Team White’s, first with a win from Fat Perez, then Ryan Whitney and Salim Sirur.
Despite their win, Team White was thrown back onto the course, their 16-person team drafted into teams of four with one team to be eliminated at the start of episode five.
