Gymnast Kiara Hockman wins national titles, and other college updates

Jackson High School graduate Kiara Hockman is a national champion in gymnastics for SUNY Brockport, after sharing the title in two events.

The junior shared titles in the vault and floor exercise at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association National Championships, March 20, in Cortland, N.Y. Her scores were 9.850 on the floor and 9.800 in the vault. This is her third straight All-American honor in the vault. She also earned All-American honors this year on the balance beam (9.775).

Her performances helped Brockport place third as a team with a season-high total of 193.875 points.

Hockman also delivered a big effort for Brockport earlier in the month at the NCGA East Regionals on March 7 in Providence, R.I. to lead the Golden Eagles to their sixth straight regional title. Hockman finished first in floor (9.875) and vault (9.800).

Olivia Scheibelhoffer (Green)

The sophomore helped Findlay post its best effort ever in the Division II NCAA Championships, March 10-14, in Evansville, Ind., as the Oilers finished seventh out of 33 teams. Scheibelhoffer earned five All-American honors, one individually and the other four with relay teams. She finished second in the 100 butterfly (55.62) and really sparkled in relays helping Findlay finish second in both the 200 medley (1:38.49) and 400 free (3:19.98) and fifth in both the 200 free (1:31.72) and 400 medley (3:39.19). The time in the 400 medley is a school record. Findlay earned its bid by winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference for the fourth straight year, Feb. 10-13, in Canton. The Oilers won that meet by more than 300 points. Scheibelhoffer won the 100 backstroke, took second in both the 50 free and 100 free and swam legs on the winning 200 free, 400 free and 400 medley relays.

Levi Hellmann (Jackson)

The sophomore diver will represent West Virginia in the Division I NCAA Championship, March 25-28, in Atlanta, after finishing fourth in platform at the Zone A Championships, March 9-11, in Annapolis, Md. The top four finishers advanced and Hellemann scored 608.70 points to nip the fifth-place finisher who had 601.80 points. He posted big efforts on his fifth and sixth dives to advance. Hellmann also finished 12th in the 3-meter event with a score of 636.65.

Emma Jackson (Marlington)

The junior third baseman is hitting in the cleanup spot for the Bethany (W.Va.) softball team, which is 9-1 during its Florida trip after a 10-1 victory over Potsdam on March 12 in Naples. Jackson is batting .548 (17-for-31) with two doubles, a home run, six runs and a team-high 15 RBIs. She had three hits with two RBIs in an 8-3 win over Pitt-Bradford on March 9 in Fort Myers.

Collin Sullivan (Fairless)

The freshman was named Newcomer of the Year in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference after a big season with the Lourdes men’s wrestling team. Competing at 285 pounds, he also earned a spot on the all-league first team. Sullivan earned a berth in the NAIA Championship and had the best record for the Gray Wolves going 2-2, including an upset against the No. 8-ranked wrestler on March 8 in Park City, Kan. Sullivan also was named an NAIA Scholar All-American.

Jaylen Jeter (McKinley)

The freshman guard had a big season for the Blackburn (Ill.) men’s basketball team, and the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rewarded him for his efforts. Jeter was named Sixth Man of the Year, was a first-team all-conference selection and landed a spot on the all-defensive team. He averaged 17.7 points (19.6 in conference play) and had a team-high 67 steals. He had six steals in two games and had a season-high 36 points in an 80-74 win over Westminster on Jan. 17.

Josh Dezenzo (Marlington)

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed senior is hitting .364 serving as designated hitter for the Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) baseball team (8-2). Dezenzo has 12 hits in 33 at-bats with six doubles, a triple, a home run and two RBIs. He is second on the team in runs (13) and has stolen five bases in six attempts.

Jenna Slates (Green)

The 6-0 freshman forward was named to the Midwest Region second team by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association on March 12 after a standout season with the Ashland women’s basketball team. On March 6, she was named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and was a first-team all-league pick. Slates started all 27 games for the 14-13 Eagles and averaged 16.1 points and 11.4 rebounds with 37 assists and 22 steals.

Quentin Toles (Perry)

The 6-2 senior guard was named to the Gulf South Conference second team after helping the Alabama Huntsville men’s basketball team post a 23-10 record. Toles led the Chargers in scoring with a 16.9 average and had 20-plus points in 15 games highlighted by a season-high 30 in an 89-83 victory over Union (Tenn.) on Feb. 14. UAH saw its season end with a 79-63 loss to Nova Southeastern in the Division II South Regionals championship game on March 17.

Lauren Esposito (Jackson)

The junior is starting in goal for the Northern Michigan women’s lacrosse team, the Wildcats 6-2 after a tough 13-12 victory at Ashland on March 13. She matched her season-high with 12 saves. She also had that total in a 20-10 season-opening victory over Calvin. Esposito has started seven games and is 5-2. She has given up 63 goals with 60 saves. She has a 15-8 career record and 270 saves in 41 games. She was 6-2 as a freshman with 131 saves.
