Bowden Francis, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios and Shane Bieber started the season on the injured list. But after his first start, Cody Ponce suffered a freak accident, with an ACL strain that will keep him out for a while.

As Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports, Ponce is going to undergo surgery and is now slated for a lengthy six-month recovery timeline.

Cody Ponce faces six-month recovery amid knee surgery

"Cody Ponce (right ACL sprain) will have knee surgery next week, John Schneider says," Matheson reports. "Recovery estimate: 6 months. #Blue Jays."

This update from John Schneider on Ponce is a tough one. His injury was always going to be a long recovery, and this update confirms it.

Ponce, after signing a $30 million deal with the Blue Jays following a successful stint overseas, is going to be out for quite some time.

If Ponce were to return in exactly six months and not simply be ready to begin warming up for a return, he'd return in early October, just in time to pitch in the postseason for the Blue Jays.

Technically, his 2026 season isn't over yet. His regular season is all but over, but he could be a playoff hero if his recovery goes very well.

The Blue Jays shouldn't rely on such a return happening, as it's far too risky to hope for Ponce, coming off knee surgery, to be ready to pitch, let alone in the postseason or the World Series, just six months after this ACL injury.
