According to Mundo Deportivo, Frenkie de Jong has taken a significant step forward in his recovery, training with the group for the second consecutive session.
The Dutch midfielder is now pushing to be available for the upcoming Catalan derby against Espanyol, which is a development that could not have come at a better time.
Barcelona are currently balancing two massive challenges – the derby itself and the decisive Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid.
With injuries, fatigue, and suspensions piling up, Hansi Flick has been forced to navigate a stretched squad.
That is why De Jong’s return carries such weight.
Return is near
After missing nine matches across all competitions since late February due to a distal biceps injury, the midfielder is finally nearing full fitness.
His absence has been felt deeply, not just in terms of quality but also in terms of control and balance in midfield.
Over the past two sessions at the Ciutat Esportiva, De Jong has gradually increased his workload.

Initially easing back into training, he has now reached a point where he is working at the same intensity as the rest of the squad.
Just as importantly, he has resumed work with the ball, which is often the clearest sign that a return is imminent.
Troubles in midfield
Barcelona’s midfield options have been stretched thin in recent weeks.
Pedri is unlikely to feature in the derby after being forced off in the previous match, while Marc Bernal remains unavailable.
This has left Flick with limited flexibility in one of the most important areas of the pitch.
This is why de Jong’s presence gives Barcelona a much-needed assurance.
Notably, the coaching staff is planning to ease him back into action, potentially giving him his first minutes at the Spotify Camp Nou before building towards full fitness for the clash at the Metropolitano.
Despite this development, it remains unlikely that Flick will throw De Jong directly in the starting XI against Espanyol.
If anything, the Dutchman is expected to be introduced in the latter part of the match, depending on the necessity.
