Before their 2026 final appearance, only two franchises in eighteen seasons of IPL cricket have successfully defended their title the following year.

In this article, The Sporting News tells you about those two instances.

Which teams have successfully defended their titles in IPL history?

Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011)

Chennai Super Kings were the first team to win consecutive IPL titles, claiming back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011 under MS Dhoni's captaincy. That CSK side was built around Dhoni's calm, Suresh Raina's consistency, and a bowling attack that knew how to win close games. In 2010, they defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs and in the next edition, they beat RCB by 58 runs.

Mumbai Indians (2019, 2020)

Mumbai Indians (MI) became the second side to win consecutive IPL titles. They won in 2019 and followed it up in 2020, with Rohit Sharma leading a side packed with match-winners across every department.

The 2019 final is widely regarded as one of the greatest finishes in the tournament's history. MI batted first and posted a modest total of 149/8 on a good surface. During the chase, CSK lost wickets at regular intervals and in the final ball, they needed two runs off Lasith Malinga. Shardul Thakur was on strike, but the Sri Lankan had the last laugh as the batsman was trapped LBW.

Whereas, that 2020 triumph came in the UAE during the pandemic-affected season. They beat DC by five wickets to lift the trophy, with Rohit Sharma playing a captain's knock of 68 runs of just 51 balls.
