Eagles rival earns surprising ranking among new NFL head coach-QB duos

· Yahoo Sports

Though they'd never admit it, the NFL would love it if the New York Giants were a consistent winner. The Philadelphia Eagles' rival plays in our great nation's biggest TV market. After landing some national praise last season, Big Blue hopes to take another step forward under John Harbaugh's leadership.

In a recent CBS Sports ranking of the NFL's new quarterback-head coach pairings, Jared Dubin placed Jaxson Dart and John Harbaugh sixth overall. They land behind the following: Josh Allen and Joe Brady (Buffalo Bills), Lamar Jackson and Jesse Minter (Baltimore Ravens), Kyler Murray and Kevin O'Connell (Minnesota Vikings), Fernando Mendoza and Klint Kubiak (Las Vegas Raiders), and Cam Ward and Robert Saleh (Tennessee Titans).

Dart and Harbaugh also land ahead of some more established combinations around the league. The reasoning was understandable. Dart flashed intriguing athleticism during his rookie season. Harbaugh's reputation was built during 18 seasons as Ravens head coach.

His ability to extend plays and create offense outside structure gives the Giants something they haven't had in years. Harbaugh's steady leadership also provides credibility to a franchise attempting to climb back into contention, but here's the obvious question.

How much of a threat are the Giants to the Eagles in the NFC East?

In speaking of the Giants, there is an important distinction between optimism and superiority. They may be improving, but Philadelphia is still the class of the NFC East.

Philadelphia enters the season with the division's most complete roster, one of the NFL's premier coaching staffs, and a championship pedigree few teams can match. While New York deserves recognition for its progress, it remains several steps behind the Eagles in terms of proven production and overall roster strength.

That's why any discussion about NFC East supremacy still begins in Philadelphia. Could the Giants become more competitive? Sure, they absolutely could. Could they steal a game or make life uncomfortable for their rivals? Of course they could. Are they ready to contend? Probably not...

Until someone knocks the Eagles off their perch, they're the team everyone else in the division is chasing. If Philadelphia has a legitimate challenger this season, it may be the Dallas Cowboys rather than a Giants team that is still proving it belongs among the conference's contenders.
