The narrative throughout almost all of the NHL postseason was that Mitch Marner was rewriting the script.

He may have been underwhelming in his Toronto Maple Leafs playoff career, but with the Vegas Golden Knights this season, Marner was leading the entire league in points in the playoffs.

The Golden Knights lost the Stanley Cup Final to the Carolina Hurricanes in six games, though, and some hockey fans have pounced to criticize Marner.

Why? Because he didn't do anything in the final two losses.

After leading the playoffs in points, he was point-less in Games 5 or 6, the two losses that gave Carolina the Cup.

It's a small sample size, and Marner's overall playoff output will remain highly encouraging for Vegas.

He can't be expected to be the only player who leads the way for Vegas, but it was unfortunate timing for the Golden Knights and for Marner that he went quiet in these final two games of the season.

Vegas brought Marner aboard in the big offseason sign-and-trade from the Maple Leafs because they knew his superstar all-around game could make a difference. The last month-plus, that's exactly what happened.

Marner just managed to disappear with everything on the line. That doesn't have to tell any kind of story, but some fans will certainly take it to suggest Marner doesn't have the clutch gene.

And at least on this occasion, that appears somewhat true.

Marner will have to wait nearly a year to get the chance to rewrite his story again.
