EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — After 111 years, EVSC Historic Bosse Field will be getting a face lift.

Approved by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, a project that is estimated to cost $2.1 million will transform Bosse Field from dirt and grass to turf.

The decision was met with some backlash by community members who wanted to preserve the history of the third-oldest ballpark.

The EVSC said the changes will be worth it in the long run.

“We understand the traditions, we understand people and fans have commitment and strong feelings about that and we respect that,” EVSC chief communications officer Jason Woebkenberg said. “At the end of the day, our goal is to maximize the number of games our student athletes can play in this setting, on this field. Turf is going to allow us to do that.”

The new turf will also allow the venue to host later into postseason play. Due to the grass, Bosse Field was a host sight for just sectional and regional championships. The field can now be used for semi-state action.
