Diamondbacks vs Guardians live updates. Lovullo clear on deadline

CLEVELAND — The Diamondbacks and Cleveland Guardians continue their three-game series Saturday, Aug. 1, here at Progressive Field, and, for the Diamondbacks fan base, there is a focus on this game as well as the trade deadline.

While general manager Mike Hazen and his staff continue to have conversations ahead of the Monday deadline, the Diamondbacks entered play on Saturday in second place among the wild-card contenders.
Hazen said his priorities remain landing a starting pitcher and a hitter, likely a left-handed one.
“They’re 1 and 1A,” Hazen said July 31. “Those are things we’re focused on.”
As Monday's 3 p.m. MST deadline nears, Hazen will continue to be somewhat at the mercy of the sellers.
“When you have the players and you’re making the trades, you get to determine the time,” Hazen said. “When they have the players, you don’t get to determine the time."
Meanwhile in the clubhouse, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said on Saturday that he picked up on something New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said about this time of year. He knows players talk about what could happen if he warns them not to.
"He said 'It's either going to happen or it doesn't happen,'" Lovullo said. "I can't keep thinking about it to where we all get distracted.
"It's so easy to get sidetracked by the noise. That's every day, but it's amplified right now. There's two more days before this trade deadline; it's a real thing, and I just keep saying I'm proud of these guys for what they've done to put us in this position. We deserve to have consideration as buyers, and hopefully that's what happens. But whatever happens, we support."
Diamondbacks at Guardians, 4:15 p.m., FOX
Diamondbacks LHP Kohl Drake (0-0, 5.00) vs. Guardians LHP Parker Messick (8-6, 2.59).
At Progressive Field: Drake earns a third start since his call-up from the minors earlier this month, his second on the road. He got through only four innings against the Nationals on July 26, but struck out five batters in his first start against the Athletics. Drake remains in the rotation because he's kept the team in games when he's pitched. He had a rough fifth inning in Washington in his last start and allowed four runs in all. ... Messick is on a nice roll over his past four starts. He's allowed just one earned run in each of them, including 7 2/3 innings of work against Tampa Bay in his most recent outing, in which he struck out six without a walk.
