Toronto Blue Jays Slugger Could be Eyeing Trade to Divisional Rivals

The Toronto Blue Jays at this point are expected to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Monday (Aug. 3).

The Blue Jays entered this season with legitimate World Series aspirations after winning the American League pennant last year and making it to Game 7 of the World Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in extra innings.

Alas, injuries and regressions led Toronto to a 50-59 record entering Friday. Toronto began the weekend at the bottom of the American League East, 14.5 games out of first place in the division and 5.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the AL.

The Blue Jays hope to get back to their winning ways in 2027, but will likely use the trade deadline to shed some of the payroll from their $282 million roster, which ranks fourth in the major leagues, per Spotrac.

And based on recent reports, Toronto could look to one of its American League East rivals to find a home for one of its highest-earning players.

According to a post on "X" from Nat Gordo, via a report from CBS Sports baseball insider Julian McWilliams, the Boston Red Sox are a potential trade destination that intrigues Blue Jays designated hitter/outfielder George Springer. The Red Sox also have reported interest, but under specific circumstances.

Springer has 10-and-5 rights on his contract, which allows a player with 10 years of service time in the majors who's spent five consecutive seasons with the same team a no-trade clause. This year is the four-time All-Star's sixth with Toronto.

Springer is simultaneously one of the Blue Jays' highest-paid players ($24.16 million salary in 2026) and one of the players who's been hit by the injury bug.

The former World Series MVP has played 79 of a potential 110 games this season. He was on the injured list from April 12-29 due to a left big toe fracture. He also missed time on the paternity list and bereavement at the beginning of July.

Springer has spent most of the season in a designated hitter role. He's played in the outfield just one game this year. He's slashed .235/.317/.402 with a .719 OPS and has hit 13 doubles, a triple and 12 home runs with 34 RBIs.

The three-time Silver Slugger has been unable to replicate his form from last year, where he was one of Toronto's best hitters. He slashed .309/.399/.560 with a .959 OPS in 140 games in 2025 and hit 27 doubles, a triple and 32 homers with 84 RBIs. He continued his strong showing into the playoffs, where he finished with a slash line of .284/.347/.552 with an .889 OPS in 16 games and hit six doubles and four homers with 10 RBIs.

One of Springer's home runs in the playoffs was the go-ahead three-run shot in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series that sent the Blue Jays to their first World Series since 1993.

Springer is 36-years-old and currently in the middle of his 13th major league season. He's set to be a free agent after this season and will likely hope to land with a playoff contenders in hopes of winning a second World Series before heading to a free agency that will also likely include a lockout.
