Much has been written about the altercation between Sophie Cunningham and DiJonai Carrington this past Saturday. Though Cunningham was understandably heated right after getting knocked down by Carrington in that Indiana-Chicago game, she was significantly calmer when talking about the Sky guard three days later.
After the Fever defeated the New York Liberty 106-92 on Tuesday, Cunningham praised Carrington, who was given a Flagrant 2 and ejected for her actions against the Fever guard.

“DiJonai, she’s a hell of a player. She’s a great defender. [Stephanie White] coached her for, I don’t know how many years in Connecticut. So, give DiJonai her flowers.”
Cunningham also had positive words to say about her coach, Stephanie White, who has been criticized by fans and analysts for speaking in defense of Carrington after the incident.
“Me and Steph are great. Steph is great with all of us. It’s really the outside noise that’s trying to distract us, but we’re good.”
The harmony between the Fever coaches and players was on full display on Tuesday when they knocked off the Liberty to secure back-to-back wins. Cunningham finished with 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Fever were led by Kelsey Mitchell (28 points on 11-for-15 FG shooting) and Caitlin Clark (22 points, four rebounds, 10 assists). The win propels Indiana (21-12) to fourth place in the standings, just a game and a half behind the defending champions Las Vegas Aces (23-11).

In the pregame media session, though, Stephanie White was even more intense as she slammed netizens who have been caught up in speculation on the Fever locker room.
Instead of taking questions from reporters, White delivered an impassioned opening statement to blast the narratives concerning her comments that appeared to defend DiJonai Carrington fouling Sophie Cunningham.
“For those who have anything to say about the play in the last game. I didn’t see the play in real time. I went straight to a press conference. I thought the play got called right. Thankfully Sophie’s okay. Was it egregious? Absolutely…The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided.”
White added that she will “always stand by” her players, ending her remarks with the pronouncement that “everybody else can go to hell.”
