ST. LOUIS — Jordan Walker has spent much of his young career trying to live up to the enormous expectations that followed him into pro ball.
Now, the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder is doing something no other active major leaguer has done.

Walker has homered against 55 different pitchers to start his MLB career without ever hitting two bombs off the same pitcher. That gives him the longest active streak of its kind in the majors and puts him within distance of the all-time record.
Walker hit the 55th home run of his career Tuesday night, continuing his streak of hitting home runs off of different pitchers.
According to baseball researcher Sarah Langs, Walker's 55 consecutive home runs against unique pitchers rank second all time since 1900. Only Willy Adames, who homered against 57 different pitchers to start his career, has a longer streak.
That means Walker needs just two more homers against unique pitchers to tie Adames, and a third against another to have the longest streak in MLB history.

It may be possible that the current era of baseball has helped make this streak possible for Jordan Walker. Starting pitchers typically don't go as deep into games as they used to. Relievers and closers almost always finish out games, so with starters not going the distance as often, this creates a larger pool of arms for hitters to face.
Walker seems to have taken advantage of that variety.
Eventually, the list of pitchers Walker has yet to homer against will get smaller, making the streak all the more difficult to keep up, but for now, the 24-year-old is closing in on a piece of MLB history.
The Cardinals face Tarik Skubal and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday for their season finale in LA. Walker has never homered against Skubal.
If Walker hits one, and only one out against Skubal, the streak will move up to 56, putting him just one away from tying Adames' record.
