Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 7 six times and have a 4-1-1 record.
In 2024, the Vols defeated North Carolina State, 51-10, in the Duke's Mayo Kickoff Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava completed 16-of-23 passing attempts for 211 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also recorded 65 rushing yards and one touchdown on eight attempts.
Dylan Sampson totaled 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts. He also recorded three receptions for 37 yards.
Squirrel White led the Vols in receiving yards (67). Miles Kitselman and Holden Staes totaled touchdown receptions for the Vols.
Defensively, Tennessee forced three turnovers. Will Brooks returned an interception for a touchdown, while Dominic Bailey and Jeremiah Telander each recorded one fumble recovery.
