Braves make Lane Thomas IL move official and call up DaShawn Keirsey Jr.

Following Thursday’s win for the Atlanta Braves over the Tampa Bay Rays, Walt Weiss told the media in the postgame press conference that Lane Thomas would be heading to the IL. This was after he was a late scratch for the matinee day affair and it turned out that the ailment was serious enough that he’d have to go on the shelf for a bit.
There wasn’t a ton of speculation as to who would be the call-up, as the safe assumption was always that DaShawn Keirsey Jr. would be the one replacing Thomas. That has turned out to be the case, as the Braves announced that Thomas is on the IL with a “strained left intercostal muscle” and that Keirsey is his replacement.

It’s been a bit of a slow adjustment period for Thomas since arriving in Atlanta and this certainly won’t help matters. Thomas has hit .171/.261/.317 for the Braves since arriving ahead of the trade deadline and he’s produced .261 wOBA and 61 wRC+ since joining the Braves.
For Keirsey, this’ll be his first time getting called up since that weird moment in June when he was selected to the big league roster and then immediately assigned to Gwinnett (which was probably because Atlanta had some sort of deadline to add him to the big league roster or release him and they didn’t want to release him), so it’ll be nice for Keirsey that he’ll actually get to put on the uniform this time.
We’ll see if he plays though — his stats from his stint in Minnesota in 2025 weren’t great but he did make a pretty strong effort to get onto the Opening Day roster back in spring training, so there’s that. Keirsey has hit .247/.303/.346 at the Triple-A level this season with a wOBA of .296 and a wRC+ of 72. I’d imagine that he’d get some pinch running and defensive substitutions in while he’s up to replace Lane Thomas.
