Rams HC Sean McVay Opens Up About His Mental State
The interview with CBS correspondent Jon Wertheim was recorded during training camp and aired just three days after the Rams’ loss in Australia.
During the conversation, McVay opened up about the pressure he feels as a head coach and feeling “up and down” mentally.
“I feel bad that you guys are doing this incredible story and, you know, I’m not in a good place right now. I’m not happy with how practice went,” he admitted.
McVay explained that “success is never linear” and that the goal is just identifying those “triggers” and focusing on “how quickly can you snap out of that.” When Wertheim asked if those moments happen often, McVay gave a straightforward answer: “All the time.”
McVay’s comments quickly went viral, with NFL fans expressing concern about McVay and speculating about whether he could eventually walk away from coaching.
One fan believes another disappointing season could push McVay toward retirement: “If the Rams have a disappointing season this year, I genuinely think this dude retires. His mental health is very clearly tenuous.”
Another fan agreed, suggesting the pressure of coaching appears to be taking a toll on McVay. “Seems like the coaching gig is really getting to him, seems pretty anxious even about practice,” they wrote.

“He doesn’t look healthy at all. Man those eyes are bugging out,” another fan added, focusing on McVay’s appearance during the interview.
“Man he looks beyond stressed out,” another wrote.
Another fan brought the Rams’ roster situation into the discussion, pointing to the pressure surrounding the team’s Super Bowl ambitions.
“That and it’s a complete rebuild next year if they don’t win the Super Bowl. They bet their future on a ring,” they said.
One user also suggested retirement may not be completely out of the question, given McVay’s previous comments about considering stepping away to pursue a broadcasting career.
