Updated MLB playoff odds for American League teams

The MLB postseason picture is beginning to take shape, but there is still plenty of uncertainty in the American League. The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees have already clinched playoff berths, while the Boston Red Sox have built a sizable advantage for another spot.
Beyond those three teams, however, the race remains wide open with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

According to the latest playoff chances shared by ESPN’s Buster Olney from FanGraphs, three teams currently have better than a 70% chance of reaching October: the White Sox, Astros, and Guardians.

- Chicago White Sox: 82.2%
- Houston Astros: 81.9%
- Cleveland Guardians: 71.4%
- Texas Rangers: 37.2%
- Toronto Blue Jays: 21.8%
- Baltimore Orioles: 3.4%
- Detroit Tigers: 1.6%
- Seattle Mariners: 0.4%
- Minnesota Twins: 0.1%
Chicago and Cleveland are locked in an incredibly tight AL Central race. The Guardians improved to 77-75 with a dramatic 7-6 walk-off win over the White Sox on Tuesday, leaving them just a half-game behind Chicago. The White Sox are 77-74 and hold the season-series tiebreaker over Cleveland, making Wednesday’s series finale especially important.
Houston, meanwhile, continues to hold the advantage in the AL West despite hovering around .500. The Astros entered Wednesday one game ahead of Texas, giving the Rangers two different potential paths into October through either the division or Wild Card race.

Rangers and Blue Jays still have a chance

The Rangers improved to 75-76 with a 4-2 victory over Boston on Tuesday and remain only one game behind Houston in the AL West.
Toronto’s situation has become considerably more difficult. The Blue Jays fell to 75-77 following a 10-1 loss to Detroit on Tuesday, dropping them two games behind Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card position.
Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle and Minnesota are still mathematically alive, but the FanGraphs numbers show just how little room for error remains.
The American League could ultimately come down to three races: White Sox vs. Guardians in the AL Central, Astros vs. Rangers in the AL West, and whichever teams fail to win those divisions battling Toronto for the final Wild Card spot. With fewer than two weeks remaining, almost every game involving those clubs carries postseason implications.
