Week 3 in college football marked the start of SEC conference play for several teams across the country. On Saturday afternoon, the South Carolina Gamecocks were taking on the Mississippi State Bulldogs at home.

Although the Gamecocks were slight favorites at home, Mississippi State went on the road and won 41-34 in a final score that felt closer than it was. 

Although the Gamecocks were up 23-14 at halftime, Mississippi State scored 27 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters, and led 41-23 early in the fourth quarter. 

Midway through the fourth quarter, frustrated Gamecock fans chanted about wanting to move on from sixth-year head coach Shane Beamer.

Will South Carolina fire Shane Beamer?

Shane Beamer entered this season squarely on the hot seat. Last season, South Carolina finished 4-8, in what was Beamer's second season below .500 for Beamer. The Gamecocks went 9-4 in 2024, one season after finishing 5-7 in 2023. 

While South Carolina' season is far from over, this loss doesn't bode well for the Gamecocks. South Carolina has remaining games against some of the top College Football Playoff contenders in the country.

Next week, the Gamecocks play No. 10 Alabama on the road. South Carolina also has road games against Florida and Oklahoma, as well as home games against Tennessee, Texas A&M and Georgia.   against  entering his sixth season with the Gamecocks. 

If South Carolina does at the very least not make a bowl game this season, it's unlikely that Beamer Ball continues in Columbia.

South Carolina fans chant 'fire Beamer'

Midway through the fourth quarter, several Gamecocks fans started chanting "Fire Beamer" from the stands: 

Late in the second half, some Gamecock fans started leaving Williams-Brice Stadium as well. While South Carolina tried to make it close at the end, the 10 points the offense scored in the game's final four minutes was too little too late. 

Shane Beamer buyout

According to Greenville Online, Beamer's buyout is currently $27.9 million. On Dec. 31, that number drops to to $22.1 million, which could factor into the timing of the decision to move on.

He has a 32-34 overall record in Columbia, and finished 4-8 last season.
