Serena Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, pulled no punches on social media after a vocal online user tried to diminish the athleticism of professional women’s tennis players. The fiery exchange happened in an X post where Stubbs was actually discussing the format of lengthy tennis matches.

Recently, Rennae Stubbs proposed overhauling the format of late-night matches and battles that extend beyond five hours. One user saw her comments as a challenge and wrote:
“Cancel all women’s matches. More time for the real Players.”
Serena Williams’ coach furiously gave the user a blistering reality check:
“I really hope you don’t have daughters or granddaughters!”
The user did not respond at the time of writing, but Stubbs’s point highlights a growing trend in tennis where prominent players are no longer staying quiet when it comes to protecting the integrity of women’s sports.
The exchange stemmed from Stubbs’s proposal to shorten lengthy matches. Stubbs suggested that a 10-point tiebreaker could be used to decide the outcome if a match extends to a fifth set. Stubbs’s point was to basically eliminate the physical toll that comes with long, grueling matches.

Serena Williams’ Coach Talks About Her Journey as a Coach
Serena Williams’ coach and four-time Olympian Rennae Stubbs opened up about how she got into coaching during an interview with Marie Claire, and the joy she feels in passing on the knowledge to someone else:
“I got into coaching because I always felt that I had that brain, maybe because of empathy. Eventually, when I got into coaching, the first time with an Australian player, or even with Serena, people would hear what I would have to say or like what I would have to say to them because I really cared about how they were doing.”
Stubbs was Serena Williams’ coach in August 2022 when she played at the US Open, and is now back in her team after the American’s return from retirement.
