- Win in the trenches. If the weather forecast is to be believed, this game is going to be about getting a push at the line of scrimmage and winning the time of possession battle. Boston College’s key to success on offense will be to create a sustainable running attack that keeps drives long, the score close, and prevents Mason McKenzie from needing to throw the ball very much.
- The turnover battle is crucial. Even more crucial than usual. If it’s a low-scoring, slugfest game, then costly turnovers in your own territory like we saw in the Rutgers game could be devastating. McKenzie needs to make safe throws and hang onto the football. And the BC defense needs to get pressure in the pocket to force mistakes. Without that, Virginia Tech is going to exploit their talent advantage and win this one.
- Going down by more than two scores is death. This Virginia Tech offense is scoring over 50 points per game this season. Boston College scored 22 against Maine. If the Eagles have any hope of winning this game, they can’t get into a deep hole. Relying on Mason McKenzie to air the ball out in a windstorm is a recipe for disaster.

BC barely beat Maine last week. In good conditions. I have zero trust that they’ll be able to put up more points than the high-flying Hokies offense, even if the conditions are miserable.
