Kentucky Football is gearing up for a major road test against the South Carolina Gamecocks, a team UK has not beaten since 2021. That was the first year of the Shane Beamer era in Columbia, and if his Gamecocks don’t win this week, he may not have a job much longer.

Even with pressure mounting on Beamer, he just made a drastic decision that will leave the Gamecocks without one of their best players.

On Sunday, South Carolina announced that the program has suspended Dylan Stewart indefinitely. The standout defensive end will now miss the Week 5 matchup with Kentucky, and his future with the program will be determined later.

This is the latest of many setbacks Stewart has endured after a breakout true freshman season in 2024 when he racked up seven sacks and 51 total QB pressures. He looked like a future top-10 NFL Draft pick, but a back injury limited him throughout the 2025 season, though he still registered five sacks and 37 pressures.

Back issues have once again plagued Stewart, as he didn’t make his debut until the team’s Week 3 loss to Mississippi State. He was benched in Saturday’s loss to Alabama after punching a Crimson Tide player and arguing with his own coaches on the sideline.

Stewart managed six pressures (five hurries and one QB hit) in just 26 pass-rushing snaps in two games vs. SEC teams. While he may not be back to his 2024 form, he’s still a difference-maker who could have given Kentucky trouble fits.
