THE TEBOHO MOKOENA ENGINE BAFANA BAFANA WILL MISS
The 29-year-old has developed into a complete central midfielder who influences matches in both penalty areas. His relentless engine allows him to average 81 minutes per game. His passing approach is built around moving the ball forward rather than relying on safe passes.
That combination is reflected in his 91.5% pass completion rate during recent league campaigns. He also routinely produces more than 40 shots in a season, showing his willingness to contribute in the final third.
Defensively, Mokoena averages 1.8 clearances and 0.8 tackles per game, using his positioning, physical strength and reading of the game to disrupt opposition attacks.
His attacking numbers tell another part of the story. Mokoena averages 3.0 shots per game, regularly stepping forward to unleash powerful long-range efforts or arriving late inside the penalty area.
Bafana Bafana therefore lose a midfielder capable of progressing possession, breaking up attacks and creating a goal threat from distance.
EXPERIENCE THAT CANNOT BE REPLACED
Mokoena’s importance also comes from his international and tournament experience.
The midfielder has earned more than 57 Bafana Bafana caps after progressing through the U17, U20 and U23 national teams before representing South Africa at the Olympics.
At club level, he has won four PSL titles and the PSL Player of the Season award, while playing an important role for Mamelodi Sundowns in major domestic and CAF Champions League matches.
His big-game credentials are also evident internationally. Against Czechia, Mokoena recorded an extraordinary 119 touches, the second-highest tally recorded by an African player in a tournament match since tracking began in 1966.
For Bafana Bafana, one of his defining moments came at AFCON when his spectacular direct free-kick helped South Africa eliminate Morocco.
That combination of experience and technical quality gives Mosimane a difficult problem against Eritrea. The coach must replace more than Mokoena’s position. His absence affects South Africa’s defensive coverage, ball progression and attacking threat.
Bafana Bafana will therefore need another midfielder to provide the intensity and responsibility that Mokoena normally brings to the team. The options are Bathusi Aubaas and Brooklyn Poggenpoel.
