Where Kansas women’s basketball sits in Big 12 preseason coaches poll

LAWRENCE — The Kansas women’s basketball team has been projected to finish fifth in the Big 12 Conference this upcoming season, according to a recently released preseason coaches poll from the league.
The Jayhawks, led by coach Brandon Schneider, are behind Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor and West Virginia — in that order. Following close behind, in order in the 16-team conference, are Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Kansas State and Texas Tech. That group rounds out the top 10.

Schneider and company also have a pair of players on the preseason All-Big 12 team in sophomore forward Jaliya Davis and senior guard S’Mya Nichols. Nichols has been one of the best the Big 12 has to offer in recent years, and Davis was last season’s Big 12 freshman of the year. So, it’s not a surprise to see either of them on that list.
Last season, Kansas finished 22-14 overall and reached the semifinals of the WBIT. This season, they’ll be looking to get to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2024. With Davis and Nichols leading the way that’s certainly a possibility, it’ll just be a matter of it the Jayhawks can deliver.
Kansas has a pair of home exhibitions this season, Oct. 22 against Northeastern State and Oct. 29 against Washburn. After that, the regular season begins Nov. 3 at home against Omaha. KU faces a challenging schedule from there.
