The Los Angeles Dodgers are pursuing a third consecutive World Series title, and they have little reason to leave any possible advantage unexplored as they prepare to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series.

Even for a star-studded roster, October baseball often comes down to small details. Recognizing a pitcher’s tendencies, anticipating a particular offering and identifying subtle clues before the ball leaves a hand can make the difference between extending a rally and returning to the dugout.

In a sign of just how important the details can be in the postseason, the National League Division Series between the Brewers and San Diego Padres, many fans believed the Dodgers’ division rival was tipping his pitches.

“This riveting National League Division Series between the Padres and Brewers shifted to San Diego on Monday, with Milwaukee leading two games to none,” AJ Cassavell and Adam McCalvey wrote earlier this week. “And there was no buzzier topic during the off-day workout than the possibility that Miller, the sport’s premier closer, tipped his pitches during his blown save in Game 2.”

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Veteran Explains AI’s Role In Pitch Tipping

In a larger conversation in which he defended the art of identifying pitch tips, Dodgers infielder Max Muncy revealed that cutting-edge technology is changing how teams search for those clues.

“I’ve heard of a couple of teams starting to use AI programs to, you know, you plug in pitches and the program points (to) differences in where the glove is and all this other stuff and hand position,” Muncy said during an appearance on Foul Territory. “I think a lot of that is going on.”

Muncy’s comments pointed to a potential new layer of postseason preparation: using artificial intelligence to analyze video and identify small mechanical differences that might reveal what pitch is coming.

AI-assisted analysis could help teams process large amounts of video and flag movements that might otherwise escape notice.

Los Angeles Dodgers Will Seek Every Edge Against Brewers In NLCS

The Dodgers enter their NLCS rematch with the Brewers after advancing past the Atlanta Braves in four games. The Brewers, meanwhile, arrive after eliminating the Padres, setting up another meeting between two clubs with recent postseason history.

Milwaukee won 103 games during the regular season, compared with 100 for Los Angeles, and has the home-field advantage to begin the series. The Dodgers swept the Brewers in last year’s NLCS, but a repeat of that dominance is far from guaranteed.

For Muncy and his teammates, finding an advantage may mean looking beyond traditional scouting reports. AI tools could help organize and detect patterns, but players still need to interpret the information and execute against elite pitching.
