BIRMINGHAM — The state's biggest HBCU football game happens at the Magic City Classic, but the show everybody comes to see happens at halftime.

The HBCU marching bands of Alabama State and Alabama A&M take Legion Field to dazzle the audience of thousands with a show that can only be described as magical.

The competition doesn't just happen between the two football teams. The Mighty Marching Hornets and the Marching Maroon & White compete to win the halftime show. Here's what the Montgomery Advertiser observed during the 85th Magic City Classic on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Drumline

Winner: Mighty Marching Hornets

This was arguably the tightest battle, but the way Mighty Marching Hornets were able to shift the tone in the songs from aggressive to calm in an instant.

Drum major

Winner: Mighty Marching Hornets

To open the performance, the drum majors of Alabama State opened with acrobatic stunts on the field; two even did splits. But the group never wained in the energy. Before each song performed, the Mighty Marching Hornet drum majors reset the tone.

Majorettes

Winner: Mighty Marching Hornets

The Stingettes don't get enough credit for how well they set up the final act for the Mighty Matching Hornets. The movements seemed to be more fierce than usual, but they never got out of sync. It's not a wonder why they draw a loud cheer.

Brass, woodwinds and percussion

Winner: Maroon & White

The Maroon & White easily was the best part of the performance, even outplaying its drumline. The Maroon & White added the flavor to its majorette segment.

Overall

Winner: The Mighty Marching Hornets

For it's final act, the Might Marching Hornets pulled out a Halloween classic in Michael Jackson's "Thriller". But it wasn't so much about the sounds as it was the performance. The entire band broke out in sectioned dances that Jackson does in the music video. Each section took a different part of the dances. Hard to beat that.
