United's poor form has piled the pressure on Michael Carrick's position as manager, while Fernandes has been in the headlines for comments made about Carrick.

The Portugal international criticised the club's tactics during a European defeat at Como last month, and was dropped to the bench for the following fixture against Bournemouth.

Fernandes has dismissed reports that he and Carrick held clear-the-air talks in the aftermath, insisting his removal from the team was due to poor performances.

The 32-year-old added that Manchester United have had to navigate a 'tough' period featuring 'a lot of lies' in the media, but said he retains belief in the manager and his teammates to turn things around.

"We don’t need to save anyone’s job. The club needed that win. The players needed that win. It’s something we needed as a group of players, together with the staff,"he said.

"We’ve been working so hard to get out of this situation, all together. It’s been tough. There’s been a lot of speculation in the media, a lot of lies around many things that have happened at this club.

"Between me and the manager, there were reports that we had cleared the air afterwards, when none of that happened. The manager made the decision to put me on the bench because I wasn’t performing that well.

"Everyone felt that was a punishment for the words I’d said, and if it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions. I have to accept them and move forward with that. It doesn’t change the belief I have in the manager, the staff and every player at this club, and it doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me."
