FIFA extends Jarell Quansah's red card suspension through World Cup semifinal

FIFA added an additional game onto the one-match suspension for England's Jarell Quansah, meaning that the defender will also miss the World Cup semifinal should his team advance.
Quansah received a straight red card in England's 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16 and there wasn't too much argument about the call itself. But after Folarin Balogun's suspension was controversially lifted for the United States, other teams and players in the tournament thought maybe FIFA was willing to be lenient with suspensions in the knockout stage this year.

Instead, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee brought down the hammer on the England defender, who now can't play on Saturday against Norway in the quarterfinals or a potential semifinal against Argentina/Switzerland next week.
After Quansah's red card, England coach Thomas Tuchel joked that having captain Harry Kane call U.S. President Donald Trump to lobby FIFA would be "good starting point," considering Trump personally called FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to ask about getting Balogun's ban rescinded.
It's another surprising decision from FIFA with Quansah's red card considered a fairly straight-forward sending off as the defender slid in for a tackle – but followed through up over the ball to make contact with the Mexico player.
England played nearly the entire second half down to 10 men and held on for the win at the Estaio Azteca in Mexico City, digging deep to see the Three Lions through to the quarterfinals.
England is already short at right back with No. 1 Reece James missing the past two games with a hamstring issue, forcing Quansah into action. James' status for the quarterfinal is still up in the air, as he missed training on Wednesday.
